Today is our fur baby Kira‘s 6th Birthday! We found her in a local petshop almost two years ago. My daughter was so attached to this tuxedo cat that we could not leave the store without her! “She chose me Mum!” Suddenly I signed adoption papers, the credit card was charged, and the cat was boxed up for us to take home. It was a very impulsive decision to say the least, but one that soon brought a lot of joy!
You see, we already had another tuxedo cat at home named Emmett after ‘Doc Emmett Brown’ from the movie Back to the Future. Can you see the resemblance from the wild eyebrows? What a cutie pie! Honestly, I had not planned on having pets, let alone TWO tuxedo cats! The kids begged me for a pet for years but the timing wasn’t right.
One year when the kids were very young a pure white stray cat suddenly appeared. I felt the need to help this poor feline. At first, the cat was in a very hissy mood but I left her some food and let her be. In a few weeks, the cat began to trust us and would enjoy being pet. Soon afterwards, you could say she was our outdoor pet!
We named her Violet after the children’s story “Violet Comes to Stay” by Cynthia Coppersmith. When winter came, I made her a small shelter on the front porch and fed her every morning before taking the bus to work. One morning, she even followed me right to the bus stop 400 meters away! I would have loved to keep her we were moving out of our house. Luckily, I nice lady fell in love with her and gave her a forever home! On a side note, children remember acts of kindness given to animals!
Fast forward 10 years, and the kids still begged me for a pet. One day, we went into the same local petshop and adopted our first cat Emmett. It was November and he was six months old at the time. Was it an easy transition? Yes and no… Sure he took down the Christmas tree that first year, and bit through so many earbuds and charging wires. He destroyed purses, curtains, and seriously clawed through my couch… But he also gave us a lot of laughs, calm, and unconditional love!
Emmett nearly died earlier this year due to a severe urinary blockage. I had to quickly decide to spend over $3,000 dollars for his emergency treatment or lose him.
The kids begged again but this time to save his life, no matter the cost! Why? Because he is part of the family! Without him, their lives would not be as bright. So there was no question, I invested in Emmett’s health and luckily, he survived!
Emmett and Kira provide so much happiness! Perhaps consider adopting a pet of your own! There are so many amazing cats and dogs that deserve a second chance in a loving home. Studies have shown that pets are good for your overall health and moral. So do some research into the ideal pet for your family, visit some shelters, and enjoy the furry blessings!
